Audience theory 2

1) Social learning theory has been criticised for simplifying the causes of violence in society. Do you think the media is responsible for anti-social behaviour and violence?

I agree withe the statement as it doesn't consider people individual characteristics. In my opinion, the media has caused the younger generation from around the ages of 8/9 - 18 to become more anti social due to the rise in the new technology. An increase in media platforms becoming more accessible for people to use within their everyday life as meant that less people go out and experience things first hand for example, more people make judgements on what to wear based on weather apps instead of experiencing it themselves. This relates to Rokeach and DeFleur saying we are dependent on media consumption. However, I dont believe the media is solely responsible for the violence promoted within society. this relates to the hypodermic needle as not all information taken in from the media is bad information.

2) How is social learning theory relevant in the digital age? Are young people now learning behaviour from social media and the internet? Give examples.

The SLT is relevant to the digital age as more young child look up to people who they aspire to be like within the near future. A prime example are young boys who aspire to be like a paticular footballer for example, F2Freestylers. Every young boys dream is to is to learn new skills and with them having a platforms such as instagram and youtube, young children observe their techniques and i try to imitate their style within football matches.

3) Research five examples of moral panic from the last 50 years. To what extent was the media responsible for these moral panics? Was the concern in society justified? How have things changed as a result of these moral panics?

Donald Trump:

The media is responsible as TV platforms such as BBC publicised him as being the naive president who was only driven by money and power. To the public, he was seen as someone who didn't care about helping the less fortunate - he was purely in it for the money and the profits. I don't thing have changed much as peoples opinions haven't changed to make him sound like a better president.

911:

The media is responsible as platforms such as NBC and youtube were used to make society fear Islam and what they stand for. However, in recent talks and videos that have been released, it shows the twin towers collapsing before the plane crashed which caused us to question whether the media can truly be trusted.

Oxford Circus terrorist attack:

The media is responsible as TV platforms such as BBC and even snapchat publicised the attack as being a threat to society. Armed Police were diploid which caused a moral panic within the streets of London. Thousands of people fled into shops for safety.
London riots:

The media is responsible as TV platforms such as BBC and ITV publicised the riot as being a planned attack that vandalised the streets of London. Social media made it seem as if the younger generation was seen as a threat and should be stopped at all cost.

4) Read this introduction to an academic paper on technopanics. What examples are given of technopanics that create fear in society?

While cyberspace has its fair share of troubles and troublemakers, there is no evidence that the Internet is leading to greater problems for society than previous technologies did. Also, several examples of fear appeal arguments will be offered with a particular focus on online child safety, digital privacy, and cybersecurity.

5) How does the author suggest that technopanics should be addressed - rather than through government regulation?

To the extent that these concerns are valid, they are best addressed by ongoing societal learning, experimentation, resiliency, and coping strategies rather than by regulation.

6) Do you think the internet should be regulated? Should the government try and control what we can access online?

In my opinion, I believe the media shouldn't be controlled as it restricts people from knowing the truth. If people were able to have full access, they would be able to make moral decisions on what's percieved as being right or wrong.

7) Apply Gerbner's cultivation theory to new and digital media. Is the internet creating a fearful population? Are we becoming desensitised to online threats, trolling and abuse?

I believe Gerbner's cultivation theory as people form their opinions over long periods of time. The fear of Islamic people for example has increased due to the media blaming any domestic attack on London as being an act of war from foreign states. This makes society desensitised as they don't question it as its seen as something that happens often.

8) Is heavy internet use something we should be worried about in society? How would you define 'heavy internet use'?

No because society gains a lot of useful information from internet sources such as the news which allows us to know whats going on within the world. Heavy internet use in my opinion is using the the world wide web for large amounts of the day.
