Audience theory 1

Hypodermic needle model

1) Read this Mail Online article about the effects of videogames. How does this article link to the hypodermic needle model?

The uni students that play shooting games became more hostile and aggressive. This is linked to the hypodermic needle as the theory states that the media injects dangerous information through the media.

2) How does coverage of the Talk Talk hacking case (see Daily Mail front page below) link to the hypodermic needle model? Why might someone criticise this front page?

The Tlak Talk hacking cause links to the hypodermic needle model because the boy was influenced by the violent video games that he was exposed to. However, some people would criticise this front page because I don't believe there is a clear correlation between violent video games and hacking a car company.

Two-step flow model

1) Summarise the two-step flow model. In your opinion, is the two-step flow theory still relevant today?

In my opinion i think i don't think the hypodermic is still relevant today because the media doesn't just inject dangerous information into us. Apps like the weather allow us to know what to wear outside in order for us to dress up warm and prevent us from getting ill in conditions such as rainy weathers.

2) How does this YouTube blogger fit into the two-step flow model?

YouTube fits into the two-step model because it s a platform that allows you to show your skills in the world of gaming. The guy is able to speak on how he feels about new maps/DLC's that have been released by the company and the new weapons the game has to offer

3) How this this Telegraph feature on Britain's most popular tweeters fit the two-step flow model? Do you think these accounts genuinely have an influence over their audience?

Having a Twitter account allows people to express their opinions on a controlled platform where people are able to challenge or agree with statements made by the tweeters. I these accounts do have an influence on how certain celebs are viewed. If for example a male actor is found cheating on his wife, this could possibly cause the world wide fans to see him as being more of a villain who put on a act in order to gain fame.

4) Read this BBC profile of Jamal Edwards. How does Jamal Edwards link to the two-step flow model?

Jamal Edwards links back to the two-step model as he was a young black male who came up from a council estate. He gave mini inspirational speeches that could be used to inspire people link him that grew up in similar situations.

Uses and Gratifications theory

1) For each of the four categories, write about one media text that fits that particular audience use or pleasure. Make sure you explain WHY it fits the category and use images or clips to illustrate your points.

Diversion: Cartoons
Personal Relationships: Eastenders
Personal Identity: Top Boy
Surveillance: Weather app

Dependency theory

1) Do you agree that audiences have become dependent on the media? What evidence or examples can you provide to support your view?

Yes, I believe people in today's society tend to use weather apps in stead of actually taking a risk every once in a while. People seem to dress according to weather forecasts instead of doing the old fashioned thing and just look out the window.

2) How has the growth of new and digital technology in the last 15 years changed people's dependency on the media? Is this a new problem?

Over that last 15 years, people dependency levels revolving around social media have increased drastically. It's as if no one in the technology era can go a day without a day on social media. However,in my opinion the increased media intake has had a positive effect on society. Having more people attached to their devices has caused the crime rate to decrease over the past couple of years.

3) Reflecting on your own media use, how does your media consumption impact on your emotions? Does the media have an overall positive or negative impact on your health and wellbeing? Why?

I think my increased media intake has had an overall positive impact on me as I've been able to keep track of current issues that have been going on around the world.
