Representation & Identity: Factsheet blog task

1) What is collective identity? Write your own definition in as close to 50 words as possible.

The idea behind the phrase collective identity is group of individuals who share the same traditions and beliefs, but at the same time have similar understandings of the world that they live in .

2) Complete the task on the factsheet (page 1) - write a list of as many things as you can that represent Britain. What do they have in common? Have you represented the whole of Britain or just one aspect/viewpoint?

  • Tea & biscuits
  • Our Monarchy
  • Diversity
  • An escape/ Chance for a second try
  • Sports (football/rugby)
  • London
  • English Breakfast
  • Public Transport - big red bus
3) How does James May's Top Toys offer a nostalgic representation of Britain?

James Mays is quite a popular presenter considering he's 48 years old. He seems to attract more of an elder audience who played with toys when they were younger. They were usually the ones who experienced a stress free life causing them to have a sentimental feeling to times when their lives where less stressful.

4) How has new technology changed collective identity?

Having more and more new technology being introduced in today's era attracts a larger target audience in comparison to previous years. Also, and using new technology (e.g. PS4) can cause them to lose their sense of imagination resulting in them playing with tops less.

5) What phrase does David Gauntlett (2008) use to describe this new focus on identity?

"Identity is complicated: everyone thinks they have got one." In my opinion this sounds as if he's trying to say peoples focus have diverted from the simple things like heritage to more materialistic things like the social media and how they are presented to society.

6) What does Gauntlett suggest about creativity and identity?

Gauntlett suggests that our identity is in fact more complicated than people originally think. People seem to think that they have their own personal identity that they portray to society when in fact they don't and need to pay closer attention to how they use media. A key example of this is Apple. Every apple product is designed to make each user feel unique and different from the rest. Features such as fingerprint scanners, apple id passwords, etc are all designed to make the person feel in control when it's quite the opposite. Apple have made their customers feel as if they are a part of the elite which have caused their customers to become desensitised to fact that they can only access things pictures and Apple Music only on apple products. He also suggests that we should look at the media as something that triggers for experiences and for making things happen.

7) How does the Shaun of the Dead Facebook group provide an example of Henry Jenkins' theory of interpretive communities online?

The Shaun of the Dead Facebook group is a group of people who shared the same experience from watching the film, 'Hey, I also learnt that word'. This is an example of collective identity and how a group of people with similar experiences and ideas can come together to create a community which contributes to the creation and identification of their personal identity.
